I'm Courtney
How did I get started in photography? At the age of four, my parents got me a bright pink Barbie film camera. I carried this thing around with me everywhere for years! To be cheeky, I like to tell people I have over 25 years of experience as a photographer thanks to that little camera.
In all seriousness, fourteen years ago I started photographing as a hobby in high school. Taking classes, shooting weddings, senior portraits for friends, and content for the flower shop and movie theater I worked for. After my grandfather gave me his old film camera (Pentax K1000), the darkroom became a second home senior year as I rekindled my love for film. In college, this hobby became a passion when taking digital photography as an elective turned into a major change, literally. Now, almost a decade later, photography degree in hand, and years of corporate management experience, the journey in taking a hobby into a business has gone full swing.
Why seniors?
Honestly? My love for senior portraits is a little selfish.
My senior year, I was always behind the camera and focused on saving every penny I could for college. As a senior, the senior experience seemed silly and something overly played out that I didn't want. I may have also felt a little like I wasn't allowed to be a part of that scene. Now, over a decade later, I can genuinely say that I regret that outlook! I wish I had someone to show me how special I was and create a visual time capsule that I could look back on as I age and a heartfelt experience to remember when seeing them. The experience I wish I had is the experience that I want to give seniors! It's not silly, you're not silly, and you should do all of the high school things! Homecoming, prom, bonfires, senior photos, and graduation parties.
